Missed-Call Text-Back: Why the First 60 Seconds Decide the Job

By LeadRing · July 7, 2026 · 5 min read

When a homeowner's AC dies, they don't call one contractor — they call down the list until someone answers. The first business to respond usually wins the job, which is why a missed call you never follow up on is a job handed to your competitor.

The 5-minute rule

Classic lead-response research found you're many times more likely to qualify a lead if you respond within five minutes versus thirty, and that the odds collapse after an hour. In home services the effect is even sharper because the need is urgent and the alternatives are one tap away.

The problem: you're on a roof, in a crawlspace, or driving. You physically can't answer every call in 60 seconds. Neither can your competitor — unless one of you automates it.

What missed-call text-back does

The moment a call goes unanswered, the caller gets an automatic text from your business number — not a dead "sorry we missed you," but a real two-way conversation: it asks what they need, answers basic questions, and offers to book. Every web, Google, Angi, and Thumbtack lead can get the same instant response. The goal isn't a text; it's a booked job before your competitor even sees the notification.

Why a dumb auto-reply doesn't work

A one-way "we'll call you back" blast just delays the customer calling the next name by about ninety seconds. What recovers revenue is the conversation after the first text — collecting the address and problem, offering a time slot, escalating the no-heat emergency to your cell. That's the part you can't duct-tape together with a basic auto-responder.

Do it the compliant way

Texting customers is regulated. Done sloppily, your number gets flagged as spam. Done right, it lasts:

  • Only text people who just called or submitted a lead — inquiry-initiated, never cold lists.
  • Use A2P 10DLC-registered numbers so texts land in the thread, not the spam filter.
  • Identify your business and honor opt-out on every message.
